Good preparation for your trip will help you limit the travelling time to your final destination. Arrange as much as possible ahead of time. We will be happy to provide you with a little help along the way.
Rules
If you have already chosen your holiday destination, it is advisable to inquire about the rules that are applicable in that country (as well the countries you drive through to get to it).
Vignettes and environment stickers
Vignettes or environment stickers are required for Switzerland, Austria and some inner-city areas in Germany. You can buy these before you set off so you can avoid queues and delays.
Snow chains
Have you never used snow chains before? Practice putting them on while still at home - this is much more convenient than trying to work it out at the side of a cold road in the middle of winter (and maybe even in the dark). You will then be able to check whether your snow chains fit.
Navigation
You may find yourself in a situation where your navigation system fails or your maps are not up to date. Therefore, it is advisable to take maps as well as your navigation system.
Quiet periods
Try to drive during quieter periods. Peak hours on the motorways in our neighbouring countries along the way to your destination are: Friday between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Saturday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. On the way back: Saturday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Sunday between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Check calendars that provide traffic peak times for weekends during the winter sports season. Keep your eye on the current traffic information.
Drive safely
Of course, it’s always good to arrive at the destination quickly. However, stay safe. Make sure you’re well rested, don’t drive too many consecutive hours, and adjust your driving to the conditions.
