Winter ready

You may have arranged everything for your winter holiday, but is your car ready for the winter weather? Your car suffers badly when being driven in wintry conditions. Fortunately, there is a lot you can do to prevent problems.

Everything for the winter

Try to avoid surprises by buying a few of the things that will help you in wintry conditions. For example, make sure you have ice scrapers, window de-icer, lock de-icer, etc. with you. You could also consider a shovel, a broom, some working gloves, warm clothing, blankets, and something to eat and drink. If you find yourself trapped in deep snow, a few mats are definitely worth having.

Frost blanket

If you put a frost blanket over your windshield, you will not need to scrape it clean. This will save you time and inconvenienc

Frozen doors

Your car doors may freeze shut. You can avoid this by applying a small amount of grease to the rubber weatherstrip around the doors. Special grease sticks are available that can be used to ensure the rubber weatherstrips do not freeze. If you have forgotten to do this and your door freezes shut, it sometimes helps if you push the door closed a little tighter to break the ice. If this doesn’t work on one door, try another door and get into the car from that side.

Handbrake

It is better to avoid using the handbrake during the winter because it may freeze. It is better to leave the car in “P” or in first gear. However, if your handbrake does freeze, you can pull it a little harder to break the ice, or you can run the engine so that everything thaws.

Windows

Make sure your windows are free from grease so they don’t fog up. Remove all the snow from your windows, mirrors and lights. Only start driving when you have good visibility.
