Accident, damage or breakdown

  • I’ve been involved in an accident. What do I do?
    Stay calm and polite. Immediately put on a fluorescent jacket and make sure that all your passengers do the same. Put out the warning triangle. Call the police if anyone is hurt or if you have a disagreement with another party that’s involved. Fill in the European Accident Statement form accurately – both sides. You’ll find it with your vehicle papers.

    • Specify the exact time and location of the accident.
    • Put a cross in the middle column of all applicable subjects.
    • Fill in the driver’s date of birth.
    • Is there visible damage? Make sure you note it.
    • Write your own comment at point 14 in the column for your vehicle.
    • On the situation sketch, make sure you also draw the traffic signs, road markings, direction, demarcations, pavements, etc.
    • Is there a disagreement about the situation? You and the other party both sketch it.
    • Is anyone hurt? Make a police statement and fill in the statement number and the date on the accident statement form.
    • Are there witnesses? Note their names and telephone numbers on the form.
    • Make sure the form is signed by all involved parties. Call the police if the other party refuses to sign.
    • Is insurance or damage control included in your lease contract? Send your European Accident Statement form to insurance.belgium@athlon.com within 24 hours. Or even better: submit your declaration online.

  • My vehicle is too badly damaged to drive any further. What do I do?

    Is breakdown assistance included in your lease contract? Then call Athlon Assistance (+32 (0) 78 15 02 61), anytime, day or night. The breakdown service will tow your vehicle away, bring you and your passengers safely home and/or arrange a replacement vehicle. See also: Broken down vehicle.

  • Why can't I use the emergency button in my car?
    In order to help you as quickly and adequately as possible, we ask you to contact Athlon Assistance (+32 78 15 02 61) in the event of a breakdown or car trouble and not to use the emergency button in your car. The emergency button is used to contact the brand’s assistance and other agreements may apply here. Athlon Assistance has all the necessary information about your vehicle (right to a replacement vehicle, towing agreements, etc.) and gives the operational services the necessary information to follow up on the repair of your vehicle so that you can use it again as soon as possible.


  • My vehicle was damaged by vandalism, a collision with an animal or after a hit-and-run. What do I do?

    Make your statement to the police within 24 hours. Keep Athlon informed via the Driver Desk, making sure you provide the number of the official police statement.

  • My vehicle’s windshield or windows were damaged by stones. What do I do?

    If there is insurance or damage control included in your lease contract, you can call Athlon Glass Care (+32 (0) 70 23 33 01 € 0,30/min). You’ll be connected with the closest repair person. Fill in your accident declaration and provide us with the online form.

  • I have a broken down vehicle. What do I do?

    Park your car in a safe place as far from the road as possible. Make sure you and your passengers are wearing fluorescent jackets. Put out the warning triangle. Stand behind the guardrail and stay there.

    If breakdown assistance is included in your lease contract, call Athlon Assistance at any time, day or night on (+32 (0) 78 15 02 61). We will help you as quickly as possible. In the best case, we will repair your vehicle where it is. Otherwise, we will tow it to the nearest dealer for your vehicle make. If your vehicle can’t be repaired immediately, we will bring you and your passengers home. In the event of a breakdown, you always have the right to a replacement vehicle. In principal, this is for a maximum of five days, but the period is extended if the repairs are going to take longer.

  • What do I do if I have an accident or break down outside Belgium?

    Is breakdown assistance or insurance included in your contract? And is the country where you’ve broken down included on the International Motor Insurance card (often called the ‘green card’ in Belgium)? Then call Athlon Assistance on (+32 (0) 78 15 02 61), anytime, day or night. We arrange breakdown assistance. If you’ve found breakdown assistance yourself or have involved the police, ask for reimbursement.

    If your vehicle will be repaired within five days, you have three options to choose from:

    1. You use a replacement vehicle for a maximum of five days.
    2. You and your passengers stay at a hotel. This will be reimbursed at a rate of up to 65 euro per person, per night, including breakfast, up to a maximum of 500 euro.
    3. You receive a free journey back, with a rental car, by train (including a taxi to the station) or – if you’re more than 1,000 km from home – by aeroplane.

    If your vehicle is not going to be repaired within five days, has been stolen or destroyed by fire, Athlon Assistance will repatriate you and your passengers.

Replacement vehicle

  • When do I have the right to a replacement vehicle?

    You can count on a replacement vehicle if your lease car is not going to be available for more than 24 hours and the option is included in your lease contract.

  • How do I arrange a replacement vehicle?

    Reserve your replacement vehicle as quickly as possible via the Athlon Driver Desk – for example: as soon as you know the date your repairs will take place.

    Own vehicle

    Only bring your own vehicle in after all valuable items have been removed – including the ski box and bike rack. This helps protect you from the costs of loss or theft. Collect your vehicle a maximum of one day after the repairs or maintenance have been finished. Otherwise you’ll have to pay for any extra days.

    Replacement vehicle

    Check whether the state of your replacement vehicle (damage, mileage, fuel, etc.) is the same as in the status report. If it isn’t, inform the Athlon Driver Desk immediately.

    Return your replacement vehicle with the same amount of fuel as when you received it.
