Did you know?
Approximately a third of all road traffic collisions involve drivers travelling for work purposes – and this figure excludes commuting*.
Would your employees know what to do in the event of collision?
Does your fleet policy adequately explain your commitment to supporting colleagues in the aftermath?
Almost all organisations have health and safety policies in place for accidents and incidents in the workplace, but what about on the roads where driving could be considered the riskiest regular activity of the working day?
With e-commerce ever increasing and our remote behaviours evolving, there is more business need than ever for using UK roads for business purposes, putting further responsibility on employers when it comes to safety.

Supporting Brake, whose theme for the 2024 Road Safety Week campaign was ‘after the crash’, we explore practical road safety behaviours to remember ‘in the moment’ as well as how to support employees should the unexpected happen.
- Pull over or stop your vehicle as soon as safely possible and switch off the engine. Where able to pull over, turn your wheels outwards towards the roadside
- Switch your hazard lights on to alert other drivers
- Check for any visible injuries to yourself and any passengers
- If anyone is hurt or if your vehicle or any debris is blocking the road, call 999
- If no or only minor injuries, get out of the vehicle when and where safe to do so, and stand where visible at the roadside, a safe distance from the vehicle
- Whilst it is normal for adrenaline to set in whilst feeling shaken, try to remain calm to be able to assess the situation – you may need to recall some details for insurance purposes
The top four causes of road collisions are driver-led
- Distraction
- Fatigue
- Impairment
- Medical conditions
How does your fleet policy stack up, considering these points?
Do you include sufficient guidance and parameters to prevent roadside incidents and encourage positive, safe driving practices?
Does your policy include accessible contacts for physical and psychological safety such as Occupational Health, an Employee Assistance Programme or even workplace adjustments?
Its important to ensure you put measures in place to prevent the worst from occurring, but is equally important to ensure best practice and instructions for when it does.
